Overview
Hesitancy around vaccines has increased in recent years in response to several factors, including the rise of antivaccination messaging and increased access to misinformation in digital environments. Newly implemented changes around vaccine communication and recommendations from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) risk adding confusion adolescents and their families encounter when making important health decisions. Research has shown that health providers can significantly influence patients’ decisions to vaccinate, pointing to a window of opportunity for health care professionals to combat the growing mistrust of life-saving vaccines. This webinar will provide an overview of the changes instituted by HHS, discuss the wide-ranging implications of these decisions, provide tips for navigating conflicting information between local and federal sources, and equip youth-serving health professionals with evidence-based strategies to address vaccine hesitancy among adolescents and their caregivers. Attendees will gain the awareness and tools needed to confidently address concerns and foster trust to improve adolescent vaccination rates in diverse adolescent populations.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe recent federal changes relating to vaccine communication and recommendations affecting adolescents in the United States.
  2. Explain the impact of federal changes in discourse and recommendations on vaccine hesitancy and uptake in youth.
  3. Summarize evidence-based communication strategies that health professionals can use when discussing vaccines with adolescents and their families.
  4. Identify adolescent-centered educational resources and materials to support vaccine advocacy and uptake.
