Overview
The University of Michigan Transplant Center holds the State of the Art: Kidney & Pancreas Transplantation course each year to update health care professionals on topics in kidney & pancreas transplantation. This year the course will be a hybrid program (in-person or virtual options) on Friday, September 19.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Discuss rates of cognitive impairment in the ESRD population and impact on post-transplant care
  2. Outline the unique psychosocial challenges that older adults face following kidney
  3. Define how nutrition contributes to frailty in patients with chronic kidney disease
  4. Manage interventions for treatment of frailty and effect of frailty on patient outcomes
  5. Understand frailty, deconditioning, and sarcopenia are modifiable
  6. Understand frailty and deconditioning result in increased risk of post transplant complications and multidisciplinary treatment and exercise reduces these risks
  7. Describe the long-term outcomes in living donors over the age of 50
  8. Define the acceptance criteria for living donor candidates over age of 50
  9. Understand the differences between pre-transplant and post-transplant billing for kidney transplant patients
  10. Know the costs associated with medications following transplant
  11. Understand the role of the Organ Procurement Coordinator
  12. Gain familiarity of the timing and logistics of being called in for a kidney transplant and what direct to preop pathway is and who is a candidate
  13. Understand the factors driving the use of different kind of kidney offers to maximize access to transplant and minimize non-utilization of deceased donor kidneys
  14. Learn who may have urgency to transplant and be a good candidate for non-traditional expedited opportunities
  15. Understand the role of preservation strategies to minimize delayed graft function and improve transplant logistics
  16. Identify age-associated factors that affect medication use post-transplant
  17. Identify strategies for medication management in elderly transplant recipients
