Overview
This session will explore key aspects of diagnosing and managing eating disorders in adolescents and young adults, a population that presents unique challenges for healthcare providers. The presentation will cover diagnostic criteria for various types of eating disorders, including differential diagnoses. Special attention will be given to how personal identities and biases can impact clinical assessments. The presentation will also address the psychiatric and physical manifestations of malnutrition, exploring how these can vary and complicate diagnosis and treatment. Throughout the session, evidence-based practices will be emphasized, particularly the importance of early detection and an interdisciplinary approach to treatment, and interactive case-based quizzes will again be used to facilitate active learning and discussion.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify and analyze the role of personal and systemic biases in the screening and diagnosis of eating disorders, considering how identities (e.g., gender, race, and socioeconomic status) impact assessment and treatment.
  2. Differentiate between the various types of eating disorders using diagnostic criteria and apply case-based scenarios to enhance clinical decision-making.
  3. Recognize the psychiatric and physical manifestations of malnutrition in individuals with eating disorders and apply this knowledge to improve treatment planning and outcomes.
