Overview
This event honors the lifetime achievements of Theodore M. Cole, M.D., a pioneer in physical medicine and rehabilitation and the second Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Michigan. Dr. Cole arrived in Ann Arbor in 1977 from Tufts University and the University of Minnesota to lead the department facing near collapse. He is widely credited with rebuilding the program and restoring its reputation for excellence both at Michigan and nationally. A dedicated advocate for research, Dr. Cole served as a key advisor to the National Institutes of Health in establishing the National Center of Medical Rehabilitation Research, helping shape national rehabilitation research policy for the next generation. The Center’s work has been vital to advancing physiatry and the broader multidisciplinary field of rehabilitation. Dr. Cole chaired the department until 1994 and remained committed to advancing the specialty until his death in 2011. The Theodore M. Cole Resident Research Day, initiated by M. Catherine Spires, M.D., provides residents with an opportunity to present research ideas and receive feedback from leaders in medical rehabilitation. Participants will learn about current research and innovations in care in medical rehabilitation.
