Overview

This course is to provide an update on recent developments in the management of patients with chronic liver disease. A series of brief overviews, recent improvements in the medical management of steatotic liver disease, alcohol use disorder and alcoholic liver disease, autoimmune hepatitis/ PBC, assessment and management of frailty, and complications of portal hypertension will be provided. In addition, updates on the impact of subject age and medical evaluation of liver transplant candidates will be provided via a lively debate.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Understand newer approaches to the diagnosis, staging, and treatment of patients with metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).
  2. Understand and implement appropriate diagnostic tools and treatment strategies for patients with alcoholic liver disease and alcohol use disorders.
  3. Understand criteria and indications for liver transplantation in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma and colorectal cancer/ neuroendocrine tumors that are metastatic to the liver.
  4. Understand updates in the diagnosis and management of patients with autoimmune hepatitis, PBC, and PSC.
  5. Know how to assess frailty in patients with cirrhosis and explain practical tips for interventions.
  6. Know how to assess the risk versus benefit of liver transplantation for elderly patients with cirrhosis.

Following the course, we hope you will join us for lunch at 12:30 and prepare for guided tour of the Ford House at 1:15 p.m. (Tour will end at 2:45 p.m. and then there is exploration of visitor center exhibits and the shop until 3:15 p.m.) There is no additional fee for this. Please select on the registration form if you will be attending lunch and/or the tour.

Nurses: The Michigan State Board of Nursing recognizes the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) as an approved provider of continuing medical education for nurses. CME credits awarded at this program may be applied to the 25 hour relicensing requirements, per Rule 2.a., Michigan State Board of Nursing.
