Overview
This continuing education activity is designed to enhance providers’ knowledge and practical skills in the management of opioid use disorder (OUD) within an interdisciplinary team, with a focus on buprenorphine prescribing in primary care and harm reduction strategies. The first session will begin with an overview of the evidence base for buprenorphine, including its mechanism of action, clinical effectiveness, and common myths and misconceptions. The second session will provide in-depth, practice-oriented guidance on prescribing buprenorphine in primary care settings. Content will include diagnostic criteria for OUD, use of the Clinical Opiate Withdrawal Scale (COWS), available formulations, initiation and maintenance strategies, and approaches to addressing common barriers in clinical practice. Case-based learning, including a nurse practitioner–focused case, will be integrated throughout to support application to real-world settings. The third session will focus on overdose prevention and response, including recognition of opioid overdose, naloxone administration, and core principles of harm reduction. The activity will conclude with facilitated discussion, expanded case review, and question-and-answer time to reinforce learning objectives and support participant engagement

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe what buprenorphine is and explain its mechanism of action and clinical efficacy in the treatment of opioid use disorder.
  2. Explain how buprenorphine supports long-term recovery and improves patient outcomes.
  3. Discuss and advocate for evidence-based treatment of opioid use disorder within an interprofessional team.
  4. Identify strategies to advocate for patients who use drugs or are experiencing addiction, regardless of professional role.
  5. Apply harm reduction and overdose prevention principles in clinical practice.
  6. Recognize and reflect on internalized stigma related to substance use and incorporate approaches to reduce stigma in patient care.
